In 2016, I was awarded the Artist in Residence position for August. I lived two weeks in an old ranger's cabin on the Hot Springs National Park grounds. I explored the Hot Springs National Park and learned a great amount of history of the Park. In one area, a park has a walking bridge across a Rick's Lake on the Stonebridge Road. This land is part of the Fordyce Family Estate. While standing on the bridge and looking away from the city and civilization, there is a beautiful little marsh with fallen trees and deep vegetation. One day there was a blue heron feeding in the marsh. This painting is owned by the Hot Springs National Park.
Art, to me, is the thread that holds me together. Just as a weaver brings all the threads together to make a blanket, so I am held together best when art is a part of my world. This includes both creation of and appreciation of art. Art mirrors the soul of the artist and affords a glimpse into the most intimate areas of that person. I look at the world through the eyes of an artist, always looking for color, or texture, or lighting. A bowl is not just a bowl. It is a part of a composition with dramatic lighting. It is the world of imagination. What colors predominate? What medium best expresses the voice of the bowl?
